A day of fun and exciting activity greeted the kids and parents inside the Oceanarium of the Manila Ocean Park (MOP) as they lined up and register in front of the MEPCOM Activity Booth/Static Booth on 30-31 May 2009. The Activity Booth/ Static Display were one of the program organized by MEPCOM in connection with the Command’s 11th Founding Anniversary Celebration. The activity was aimed to promote environmental awareness among the youth and to help develop within them a sense of responsibility and realization that they can do their share in protecting and preserving our sea and its resources. The two (2) day event was able to attract a total of 250 participants with age range from 2-51 years old who took part on the various activities offered inside the booth. Participants include cancer patients from the Kythes Foundation, indigent kids sponsored by the Children’s Joy Foundation (CJF), local and foreign tourist.

The kids were ecstatic as they leave their hand print along with their pledge to help protect the marine environment on a canvass on the Pledge Section of the Booth. They were all smiles as they received their complimentary “smiley” pin after having been completed their sketch of what their vision of the marine environment 20 years from now. It is planned that their drawing will be sealed in a container that will be opened on the celebration of MEPCOM’s 31st Foundation Anniversary on 30 May 2029. The booth also includes showing of various environmentally related videos highlighting the beauty of the ocean, shark conservation, global warming, oil and HNS response. The PCG institutional video was also presented as well as a film produced by CDR GARON PCGA entitled “Save our Seas”. The Gallery section exhibits a collection of underwater photos taken by CDR GARON featuring various reef fishes and organism. Photos of various PCG functions provided by the CG PIO were also displayed.

The success of the activity manifested the increasing awareness of our children on the value of marine environment and the need to protect them. The Command hopes that this will serve to stir us up, parents, to start getting our acts together if we want them to enjoy and experience the marine environment they dreamed of.
