Mangrove Planting

Recognizing the importance that the mangrove trees plays on the coastal ecosystem vis-a-vis the continuous decline on its population brought by land reclamation, pollution and deforestation, MEPCOM embarked for the first time on a nationwide mangrove planting program. This is in line with the celebration of the Command’s 11th Founding Anniversary. For this year, the Command veered away from its usual activity of coastal clean-up as it only provides a temporary solution to the solid waste problem plaguing our waters. The mangrove planting activity, on the other hand, will provide a more lasting impact to the environment considering the theme of this year’s celebration is focused on the legacy we wanted to leave to our children. A total of more or less 8,100 propagules/seedlings were planted at various locations in our country. The planting activities were done jointly with PCGA, various NGO’s and Local Government Units (LGUs).

Headquarters, MEPCOM held its planting activity on Brgy Bucana, Ternate, Cavite, on 06 June 2009. About of 1,600 propagules were planted jointly by personnel HMEPCOM, MEPGru NCR-CL, PCGA from 101st, 104th, 116th, 112th, 125t and 126th Squadron, Anak Dagat, Bucana Chapter, Ternate Local Police and the Brgy. Bucana. No less than Dr. Anna Marie Tamayo graced the occasion as the Guest of Honor.

It is expected that the LGUs will benefit more from the said activity as the planted mangroves will not only prevent coastal erosion but will help marginalize fishermen as the trees are expected to enhance fish population in the area.
